In the recently concluded Palarong Pambansa 2016, Negros Island Region (NIR) ended up 1st in the race for the cleanest, greenest, and most eco-friendly delegation.
“The award that we got will serve as our inspiration and moral booster to keep on doing our best. This award will guide schools of NIR [and] we will use this story to motivate our school heads and teachers to give time for clean and green,” Department of Education (DepEd) - NIR Regional Director Gilbert Sadsad said.
Delegates from NIR were billeted at the Guinobatan West Central School (GWCS).
According to Sadsad, the NIR delegation planted around 50 native trees at their host school, GWCS, as well as at the Bicol University College of Agriculture and Forestry (BUCAF).
All regional delegations are required by DepEd to plant at least 30 trees within their host schools’ premises or in other areas, which were identified in coordination with Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office.
On both schools, the said delegation also led the conduct of Brigada Eskwela, which was likewise participated by the parents and members of both GWCS and BUCAF’s community.
Sadsad said the NIR delegation also demonstrated methods on how to properly recycle materials to the parents, teachers, and members of the schools’ community.
More importantly, Sadsad said shared that, “We set aside positions when we clean and maintain the cleanliness in the schools. Those who initiated and participated in the clean up were SDSs, ASDSs, chiefs, EPS, PSDS, school heads and some teachers.”
To encourage participation, Sadsad said the delegation conducted daily monitoring and cleanliness competition among the athletes and coaches from each room. He added that the daily winners were treated with various awards.
“When we conceptualized the plan, we did not think of the competition, but [we focused on how] to make our delegation safe and comfortable. The competition was only secondary. What I know was we needed to showcase NIR and we were happy sharing our practices [to our host schools],” Sadsad said.
Sadsad added that the eco-friendly practices they implemented during the event will be replicated on the schools back in their region.
“The entire teaching staff [of GWCS and BUCAF] was grateful and happy of what we’ve done to their school. They were inspired. They committed to maintain what we’ve done to the school,” Sadsad said, referring to the response of the host schools to their eco-friendly practices.
Some of these practices include: efficient water and light usage, bringing reusable and eco-friendly feeding and kitchen utensils instead of using Styrofoam or plastic materials, practicing proper waste management, and proper water, sanitation, and food safety measures.
Beginning in 2011, DepEd has tweaked the conduct of Palarong Pambansa by integrating this policy and mandating the observation of the said measures. This is due to the positive results that left the billeting areas and gaming venues in the host region clean and orderly.
Since then, DepEd enhanced the policy by incentivizing delegations who will implement the best programs on proper hygiene, sanitation, and food safety, as well as preserving the environment throughout the event.
